Saya selalu curiga pada lagu tentang persatuan, dan What Now? sepertinya tahu itu. Kristin Chambers menyiapkan pembelaannya di bagian akhir, mengaku kacamatanya mungkin “rose colored”, alias terlalu optimistis.

Penyanyi asal Seattle ini dulu menyejukkan kita lewat Brighter Haze, lagu yang betah di ruang batinnya sendiri. Kali ini ia menoleh ke luar jendela.

Petikan gitar akustik membuka lagu. Pelan saja. Drum yang ringan menyusul, lalu vokal latar dan gitar yang lembut ditaburkan tipis-tipis. Ia tak terburu-buru. Reff mengembang penuh, dan vokal Kristin Chambers melambung tanpa perlu berteriak.

Ada ironi yang manis di liriknya. Yang paling tajam mengejek frasa “thoughts and prayers”, ucapan duka standar politisi Amerika selepas tragedi, lalu bilang niat baik saja tak cukup. Kamu bisa menebak ke mana arahnya. Reff What Now? kemudian hanya meminta kita percaya, dengan cinta sebagai satu-satunya jalan pulih. Niat baik juga, sebenarnya. Saya tertawa, lalu ikut berharap.
