Haha. Di reff The Valley, Makena menyebut dirinya juara kedua dari peluang satu banding sejuta, “They say it’s one in a million / must be the runner up then”. Pahit, tapi renyah.

Penyanyi alt-pop yang delapan tahun mengejar mimpi di Los Angeles ini menyebut racikannya salty bitch pop, musik untuk orang yang merasakan segalanya tapi memilih bercanda.

Dan bercandanya sedemikian spesifik sampai kita bisa menghitung isi dompetnya. Uang hampir habis, telepon ayah, ulangi. Gosip keluarga makin kencang (bayangkan arisan keluarga yang topiknya kamu). Saudara laki-lakinya di Denver bergaji enam digit di bisnis keluarga, dan ia mengaku mungkin cuma sakit hati karena si saudara-bergaji-enam-digit berhasil sementara dirinya hangus di lembah. Ada pengakuan iri yang jarang berani dinyanyikan orang. Tahun terburuk dalam hidupnya datang lagi, dan kali ini lebih awet daripada mantan-mantannya.

Tiga tahun lalu di Therapy Bills, tagihan Makena untuk terapi. Kini tagihannya untuk bertahan hidup.

Bunyi single The Valley lebih jinak. Gitar yang kasar, bas, dan drum yang ajek mengantar vokal lugas di depan, lalu ia menanjak ke reff yang penuh dengan nada lebih tinggi. Rapi, sesuai pakem pop rock. Kita jadi berharap musiknya ikut sesinis liriknya.

Untung liriknya sudah cukup sinis untuk berdua.
